Blog Tour: Heather Vogel Frederick Interview & Giveaway

1. What was the inspiration behind the Mother Daughter Book Club series?

The initial spark for the first book actually came from my editor. She called me up one day out of the blue and said, “You know, Heather, there are mother-daughter book clubs all over the country, and I think it would be fun if someone were to write a story about a club like that – how about you?”

I was surprised to hear that, because I have two boys, and have never BEEN in a mother-daughter book club, nor will I ever be in one, but then she went on to explain that she’d thought of me because she remembered that I lived in Concord, Massachusetts, when I was in middle school, the town where Louisa May Alcott lived when she wrote “Little Women.” “You could set the story there,” she suggested, “and have your book club read ‘Little Women.’”

Well, that was just too tempting an idea to pass up. I dove right in and had SUCH fun dreaming up the characters and the stories. There’s quite a bit of my growing-up years tucked into the books, actually.

2. Which of the girls do you relate to the most?

I was definitely Emma when I was in middle school – bookworm, likes to write, wears glasses – with a little Jess thrown in (because I love animals, and because I used to be super shy).

3. If any other female book character could join the club, who would you choose and why?

I’d love to invite Elizabeth Bennet to join the club. She’s outspoken and witty, and she thinks for herself. She makes the pages of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” sparkle, and she’d definitely make a book club meeting sparkle, too.

4. Your covers are all similar, but unique, which of them do you like best?

I love the girl on the cover of “Dear Pen Pal” – but I also love the scrumptious color of the “Pies & Prejudice” cover.

5. What is one place in the world you would love to travel to?

Only one? Hmmm. I’ve always wanted to visit New Zealand. Maybe I should think about setting a book there, and give myself an excuse to go!

  5. I have a boy too. I don't think he would particularly enjoy being in a book club with me. Neat idea though. :) Fun interview.

  6. Great interview! I think it is quite ironic that the mother of 2 boys is writing this series!
