2012: End of Year Book Survey

I decided to participate in The Perpetual Page-turner's End of Year Book Survey! I'm only doing the first part, to highlight some of the books I read this year! Make sure to visit Jamie's site if you want to participate in the survey as well!

1. Best Book You Read In 2012?

Best Contemporary: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Best Dystopian: Insurgent by Veronica Roth
Best Fantasy: Everneath by Brodi Ashton
Best 2013 Release I Read This Year: Just One Day by Gayle Foreman
Best Post-Apocalyptic: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Best Mystery: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
I read The Madness Underneath by Maureen Johnson earlier this month and was a little disappointed. I loved the first book in the series and this one was not nearly as great, in my opinion.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2012?
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern was brilliant and captivating and I completely loved it. I don't usually read many adult books, especially in this genre, but it blew me away.

4. Book you recommended to people most in 2012?
I've been constantly recommending the Divergent series to my friends and family this year. I love, love, love those books and think they will appeal to any kind of reader!

5. Best series you discovered in 2012?
It's a three-way tie between the Divergent series, the Mara Dyer series, and the Jessica Darling books! I've fallen in love with all three of these series and am kicking myself for waiting so long to start them.

6. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2012?
Daisy Whitney, Tahereh Mafi, Beth Revis, Ruta Sepetys, Brodi Ashton

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?
Slice of Cherry was unlike any book that I have ever read and it shocked me in so many ways. Dia Reeves is a fantastic writer and this book was so twisted and unique. Another was Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. It broke my heart.

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2012?
The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson had me on the edge of my seat and I stayed up until after 1 in the morning reading it.

9. Book You Read In 2012 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year:

Definitely the Divergent books!

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2012?
I love the covers of Faithful by Janet Fox, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin, Everneath by Brodi Ashton, and Tempestuous by Lesley Livingston.

11. Most memorable character in 2012?
I can't stop thinking about Lochan and Maya from Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. They are definitely characters I will be thinking about for a long time.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2012?
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi for sure. The writing was just amazing.

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2012?
I was flat-out sobbing after I finished Forbidden and I still find myself thinking about it all these months later. Another book that made me very emotional and impacted me a lot was The Perks of Being a Wallflower

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2012 to finally read?
There are so many! This year has been a good catch-up year for me. One in particular is The Perks of Being a Wallflower

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2012?
- "We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another," - Divergent
-"We accept the love we think we deserve" - The Perks of Being a Wallflower

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2012?
Shortest: Lark by Tracey Porter
Longest: The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!
The ending of Insurgent and The Evolution of Mara Dyer for sure! Eeeep, I need to know what is going to happen next!

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2012 (be it romantic, friendship, etc).
My favorite, favorite relationship was in The Fault in Our Stars. My goodness, Hazel and Augustus, there are no words for how much I adore them. I also love the relationship between Four and Tris-- they are amazing and so real. Also, Mara and Noah Shaw. Jess Darling and Marcus Flutie. Yes!

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2012 From An Author You Read Previously
The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson. 13 Little Blue Envelopes has always been a favorite of mine and I loved The Name of the Star, as well.

20. Best Book You Read That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else:
I got a copy of Just One Day by Gayle Foreman and may not have picked it up right away if I hadn't heard all of the buzz about her and her books. Luckily, I read it a few days ago and oh my god it was amazing and I will definitely be ordering a finished copy! I'm kicking myself for not reading anything by Gayle sooner.

  1. Oh man! I really need to get cracking on my TBR pile after hearing you rave about so many books that have been on my list FOREVER.

I definitely agree. Hazel and Gus' relationship was so amazing (WWWWHHHHYYYYY???????) and the Perks was awesome! I love that quote, by the way!

    Great list! :)
