Review: Demon Princess: Reign Check by Michelle Rowen

Reign Check (Demon Princess #2) by Michelle Rowen
Nikki Donovan was a demon princess. Now she’s a demon princess in love.

Fresh from finding out she is a demon princess and meeting her father for the first time, Nikki Donovan is looking forward to getting back to her regular high school life. But then Rhys, the handsome teenage king of the faery realm, enrolls at her school as a “foreign exchange student.” Her conflicted feelings for Rhys and her boyfriend are getting in the way of her new relationship with the Shadow-creature Michael. But this love triangle from hell isn’t even Nikki’s biggest problem: There’s a new prophecy that claims she will destroy all the demon and human worlds. Her best friend Melinda just might be a demon-slayer-in-training. Throw in a field trip to none other than the Underworld itself . . . and Nikki’s going to be hoping for a rain check on more than just her homework!

Review:

After finishing the first novel in the series, Reign or Shine, I've been really looking forward to reading this one. Picking up almost immediately after Reign or Shine ended, Reign Check was another exciting and well done addition to the series.

To begin with, readers got to know Nikki even better, and she really matured in this book. I could understand her actions more and she was an overall more believable and likable character. I like Nikki's personality and it makes her narration way more enjoyable. Her witty and sarcastic remarks, along with her take charge attitude are all great. Again, Michael remained one of my favorite characters in Reign Check. Readers were able to learn more about his background and about Shadows in general. Rhys also played a large role in this book and I really liked him because of how much more I got to know him. There was a hint of a love triangle that will leave readers wondering who's better for Nikki and who she's meant to be with- Michael or Rhys?

The "bad" characters were revisited in Reign Check, especially Elizabeth and Keiran. I loved all the new plot twists involving the Underworld. I'd been wanting to know more about Keiran and the Underworld since reading book one, and now I finally got the chance. The Underworld contained some awful characters, but also some new favorites as well.

There was a ton of awesome action in this novel, that along with all the exciting plot twists, made this an overall really exciting read that had me anxiously turning pages. You never knew who was going to attack who next!

Learning about the other "species" like Shadows and hellhounds was an interesting side, and I really liked how all the sub-plots tied together. The dragon oracles, friends-turned-demon-slayers, prophesies, and more all made this novel exciting and interesting and even better than the first. I can't wait to see where Michelle Rowen takes Nikki and her friends next!

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
