Chasing Brooklyn Review

Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

Restless souls and empty hearts

Brooklyn can't sleep. Her boyfriend, Lucca, died only a year ago, and now her friend Gabe has just died of an overdose. Every time she closes her eyes, Gabe's ghost is there waiting for her. She has no idea what he wants or why it isn't Lucca visiting her dreams.

Nico can't stop. He's always running, trying to escape the pain of losing his brother, Lucca. But when Lucca's ghost begins leaving messages, telling Nico to help Brooklyn, emotions come crashing to the surface.

As the nightmares escalate and the messages become relentless, Nico reaches out to Brooklyn. But neither of them can admit that they're being haunted. Until they learn to let each other in, not one soul will be able to rest.

Review:

It’s hard to say exactly how I felt about Chasing Brooklyn- because I felt so much! Laughing one minute, sad the next, I was feeling so many different emotions while reading. The writing was so personal and heart breaking that I just couldn’t put it down. Not only was Chasing Brooklyn well written, the characters were so great, I loved them all. Death is such a hard topic to deal with; I don’t always find a book I like that deals with it. Chasing Brooklyn dealt with death in a way which made me feel better knowing that you can get stronger and heal.

Chasing Brooklyn was written in verse, which I think really added to the emotion of the novel. The narrators, Brooklyn and Nico, could really express themselves in this writing style. I’m really glad I got to read both Brooklyn and Nico’s perspectives because it made the story seem more realistic. The hauntings were really creepy for me, but they did add a lot to Chasing Brooklyn. I think it definitely helped Nico and Brooklyn heal.

Training for the race was another aspect of the novel I liked. There was a touch of the supernatural, but Chasing Brooklyn was really just a book about healing and finding yourself. All in all, I fell in love with Chasing Brooklyn and it’s characters and I can’t wait to read more of Lisa’s books in the future.

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
