All About Blog Fiction

I was lucky enough to get a few questions answered by Jess C. Scott the author of EyeLeash: A Blog Novel.

1. Can you describe what blog fiction is?

I'd say that blog fiction consists of telling a story, via the format of a blog. The story needs to be pretty tight, because a series of random posts still needs to have something tying it all together (in my opinion), in order for it to be considered "blog fiction".

2. What made you decide to write a book in this genre?

I'll be 23 this year. As a teen, I spent quite a lot of my time "online" (still do as a matter of fact). I thought it'd be cool to write a novel in this style and structure. I also thought it'd be something the internet generation would appreciate (this generation/group of people being very accustomed to DVDs, the World Wide Web, instant messaging, text messaging, MP3s, cell phones, and YouTube.)

3. What about writing blog fiction do you like best?

I like the contemporary vibe of it, along with the spontaneous captures of the characters' thoughts and emotions. I also like the (excruciating) challenge of having the characters sound believable/natural, yet not *too* much in their own world. I'd like for the reader to be able to follow what the characters are going through.

4. Do you think more people can relate to books written in the blog/E-mail/IM format than other books?

Possibly-- especially those who are tech-savvy and comfortable with digital media. However I think the characters and story are more important than the format of the book. The format might be fresh/innovative -- but substance should not be sacrificed for style.

5. Would you write any other blog fiction novels?

I've had one or two in mind since completing EyeLeash (gotta search for my notes somewhere...). I'll probably try something new with them. I like to discover and explore-- dullness and boredom are amongst my top enemies.

6. What other books have you read in "blog fiction"?

I've read The World According to Mimi Smartypants, and Lauren Myracle's Internet Girls series, along with Susie Day's serafina67 (the one with the bright pink cover).

EyeLeash: A Blog Novel by Jess C. Scott
"Jade Ashton is a sassy virgin. In her private blog, she vents about "fitting in" a world where superficiality reigns supreme. Suddenly all logic flies out the window when she meets Novan: the former geek, who's morphed into a delicious songwriter-musician. They decide to be "friends-with-benefits". But it's Novan, with his poems and riddling passages on his own blog-which *isn't private* - that backs out. EyeLeash captures self-discovery in the 2000s, and showcases the colorful, intricate drama in two youths' relentless search for themselves- and what's really in their hearts," Summary Courtesy of Amazon.
Thanks so much Jess and good luck with your next book! (:
